They (the Companions of the Prophet) wiped with pure earth (their hands and face) to offer the dawn prayer in the company of the Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم. They struck the ground with their palms and wiped their faces once. Then they repeated and struck the ground with their palms once again and wiped their arms completely up to the shoulders and up to the armpits with the inner side of their hands.

لوگوں نے فجر کی نماز کے لیے پاک مٹی سے تیمم کیا، یہ لوگ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے ساتھ تھے، تو انہوں نے مٹی پر اپنا ہاتھ مارا اور منہ پر ایک دفعہ پھیر لیا، پھر دوبارہ مٹی پر ہاتھ مارا اور اپنے پورے ہاتھوں پر پھیر لیا یعنی اپنی ہتھیلیوں سے لے کر کندھوں اور بغلوں تک ۱؎۔
